Fouche, Dominique.
A short description of the disease causing organisms affecting bivalves is presented in this document, including the diagnosis, the oustanding research and bivalve husbandry. Mollusc populations may be safe from disease epizootics if an early prevention of disease is coupled with a strict regulatory system on transfer (according to what happens in agriculture). The species to culture may be thoroughly selected and risky populations moved. Imported stocks are strictly controlled. The researchcs's target is to improve the diagnosis tools and try to find resistant mollusc strains. Epidemiological surveys are also necessary to control diseases.

Etude comparative en cytométrie en flux des fonctions estérases et du métabolisme oxydatif d'hémocytes d'huîtres saines, parasitées, sensibles et résistantes au protozoaire Bonamia ostrea ArchiMer
Cochennec, Nathalie; Garcia, Sandrine; Bedier, Edouard.
In order to fight Bonamiosis, the applicable means are very limited and mostly based on a quick and precocious diagnostic aimed at avoiding the propagation of the disease and a rise in the "resistance" through genetic selection. Various works are conducted in order to understand the oysters' defence mechanisms against this parasite, and then to develop new prophylaxis and fighting methods. In our laboratory, we focus on cellular compartments, the circulating haemocytes, in which B. ostreae multiplies, and their interaction with the parasite.

La bonamiose de l' huître plate Ostrea edulis. Bilan des connaissances actuelles, analyse des données collectées en France de 1989 à 2004, mesures de lutte et perspectives ArchiMer
Blanchet, Estelle.
Bonamiosis, favoured by change of temperature and stress, causes mortalities in the adult flat oyster Ostrea edulis in the majority of European oyster farmers. The life cycle of this Haplosporidia protozoan Bonamia ostreae is unknown, it is not dttectable during the five mon th latent period. Because of the Jack of sensibility of reference techniques, histology and tissue smear, further use of PCR assays or HCM-CC, in particular, is recommended. Analysis of data collected in France from 1989 to 2004 shows the absence of simple prediction methods and an apparent cyclicity of the disease. Transfer restriction and control of boat hulls can protect uninfected areas. Reducing stress and density, commercialising earlier can limit losses in infected areas. The...

Modèle d'étude in vitro de Bonamia ostreae (Ascetospora), parasite intrahémocytaire d'Ostrea edulis. Etude d'intéractions cellulaires hôte-parasite ArchiMer
Mourton, Chantal.
Oyster culture is, at a world scale, hit by variious epizooties, which are maintly caused by protozoans of the Phylum Ascetospora. Among them, Bonamia ostreae consitutes an appreciated model in order to study, at the cell scale, host-parasite relationships, as well as the immune role of hemocytes. Indeed, this parasite, which reproduces in hemocytes of Ostrea edulis, but cannot develop in Crassostea gigas. This development of an in vitro model for hemocyte-Bonamia relationships is presented. This includes the development and implementation of various techniques : making primocultures, protocol for infection with purified parasites, histological and immunoenzymatic analyses of infection. Such model allowed to study the interaction between host and...

Pigment dynamics associated with the grazing of a ciliate and a flagellate feeding on a cyanobacterium ArchiMer
Mostajir, B; Bustillos-guzman, J; Claustre, H; Rassoulzadegan, F.
The egestion of particulate material as well as pigment degradation during microzooplankton grazing on phytoplankton are poorly known processes. In an attempt to evaluate these processes, changes in pigment concentrations within various size fractions were monitored in batch cultures of an assemblage of a pelagic ciliate (Strombidium sulcatum) and a heterotrophic flagellate (Paraphysomonas sp.) feeding on a cyanobacterium (Synechococcus sp.) over a 10-day period. Chlorophyll a, carotenoids and phaeopigments were not found in the 0.1-0.7 mu m fraction while the pigments originally in the 0.7-3.0 mu m fraction (prey) were transferred into the > 3.0 mu m size fraction (predator). During this transfer, the carotenoids (zeaxanthin and B-carotene) were not...

Protiste parasite de l'huître du Pacifique Crassostrea gigas (Thumberg) ArchiMer
Comps, Michel; Razet, Daniel; Quiroz-ramos, Hernando.
Following the "gill disease" of the Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata LMK.) and the massive mortality rates that this species suffered in 1970 and 1971, the oyster farmers of the Marennes-Oléron basin, as those in other Portuguese oyster-producing areas, developed Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) cultivation in France by directly importing spat from Japan's main supply centres.
